Forget Dieting, I’m Working on a Better ME!

DSC01805I cannot deny, I am overweight.

This is my sister in law (right) and me on New Years Eve.

I’ve always been self-conscious of my looks, even when my weight wasn’t an issue.  I had never thought I was beautiful. I grew up seeing many negative situations. Often, when I was younger, I would notice my mom complain about the way she looked. She dolled herself up with makeup and curled her hair everyday to make herself feel pretty. Once I hit my teenage years, I did the exact same thing. I had never had any form of weight issue, until I got pregnant with my first child. After 4 kids, I’ve gained quite a bit of weight and haven’t felt the best about myself.

So for 2014, I’ve decided to work really hard to change my MINDSET and worry less about losing weight. I’m gonna start focusing on loving myself, than worrying about what I look like. Now, I REALLY wanna lose weight, but instead of dieting, I’ll eat better and become more active with my family.

And with kids comes GREAT Responsibility!

Our kids look up to us parents as role models. Whatever we do can affect them, positively or negatively. I feel if I want my kids loving themselves, then I need to show them that I love myself too. If I am constantly degrading myself in front of them, then they will expect that to be the norm. I have to practice what I preach. We must teach our kids to be good examples, serve others, love each other…and love themselves.

Focus less on “Losing Weight” and more on “Getting Fit”

You wanna lose weight fast? Stop eating….however, mind you, it’s extremely unhealthy, and I would NOT recommend it. Stop worrying about losing weight and how “overweight” you are. Focus more on getting active. Create family time, where you go outside and play in the back yard together, or even head on over to your local nature center or park. It’s not about losing weight, it’s about helping you feel better…inside AND out. I’ll be taking 2014 as an opportunity to better myself and my relationship with my husband and children.

and it’s going to be great!

What are some ways that help you feel good about yourself?

  1. I absolutely LOVE this post. I have been trying really hard to not buy into the thinking that skinny is the only beautiful. When I see those pictures of you I see how wonderful and amazing you are. And for the record, I ALWAYS thought you were pretty. Still do.

  2. I love this! Seriously, I’ve felt the same way so many times!! I went from a size 6 to a size 12, and I only had 2 kids! I like the idea of not worrying so much about the weight, and I LOVE the idea of becoming more active!! The craziness of life and motherhood have definitely made me more of a homebody, and I need to get out of my rut. Thanks for sharing your story with us, good luck!

  3. We try to boil, bake, and BBQ as much as we can. We try to cut as much stress out and try to plan ahead. Now that the kids ate 17 and almost 16 it had been easier. I went from a 8 back to a 6

  4. It should definitely be about health and not about weight. I have been underweight most of my life but I am sickly. I have a bleed internally that doctors can’t seem to find. I am usually anemic and constantly lose weight when I can’t physically afford to. I would rather have 20 lbs too much and be able to feel better. So health all the way. 🙂

  5. I completely agree! My grandmother who is 96 years old always said “Dieting never works. Eat what you want but eat in moderation”.

  6. This really hits home with me also. I am constantly complaining in front of my 12 year old daughter about being fat. I am probably 30 pounds overweight and work out 4 times a week, doesn’t help me at all. Could maybe be my negative attitude that I can not lose a pound!! I need to work on me also. I need to be more positive about life and being alive. Working on my attitude and having a positive outlook is a good place to start. Thank you for sharing!!

  7. I just wish I could quit eating so much!! Health is so much more important than being “skinny”. Thanks for this post!

  8. i have had a weight problem most of my life . you can do this !!! i lost 150 lbs in 1996 . i work hard to keep it off. i am heavier , but once you get there you will be so happy !!!! i am eating healthier and being more active this year !!!

  9. this is great ! i lost alot of weight years ago . i have gained a few pounds back but all the hard works you put in keeps you on track !!!! i am doing this with you !!!!!

  10. I totally agree with you. Your post was exactly what I decided for myself this year. I have some weight to lose, but I am at the point where I just want to take better care of myself overall. I want to not only eat healthier, but to think healthier (about myself), and to be physically healthy by exercising on a daily basis. I am not so focused on the weight issue as I am on the overall issue.

  11. This is my favorite post of yours, I could not agree more with what you said. You have also made me realize a few things, thank you. I feel diets don’t work, you have to make it a lifestyle change.
